III-IV C. AD Gandharan Head of Buddha

Gandharan Head of Buddha

  • Date: 3rd–4th Century AD
  • Material: Grey schist
  • Size: 27 cm high
  • Provenance: Acquired from Pandolfini Casa d’Aste, Florence, Italy, 22 July 2020
Lot 62: Sculpture Depicting Buddha, Gandhara, 3rd–4th Century

Description
A Buddha sculpture in grey schist. The face conveys an imposing presence while retaining the serene introspection of the Buddha. This head is regarded as one of the finest examples of its type. The Greco-Roman heritage of Gandharan sculpture and its evolution toward abstraction are perfectly juxtaposed here: the naturalistic curves of the nasal bridge, nostrils, and chin contrast harmoniously with the clean lines defining the lips, hair, eyelids, and brows.
Height: 27 cm
犍陀罗 三至四世纪 灰片岩佛陀头像

Condition Report
The sculpture shows a breakage to the back of the head.
