We now offer a range of short courses carefully designed and taught by our team of highly qualified practising professional artists. These courses will acquaint our students with different possible approaches to the art of drawing and painting, while also providing them with essential artistic skills and techniques.

Each course provides you with the opportunity to explore a specific medium, genre or technique in a very in-depth fashion. By the end of each course you will have acquired a solid understanding of various media and materials, which will allow you to progress and experiment further with your art practice.

Our courses are as art should be: open to everyone. We have different art short courses depending on the student's level and preferred medium. Refer to the suitability section of each art course for more details.

Our Summer Art Short Courses

A short introductory drawing course designed for the beginner and the artist who wishes to revisit the fundamental principles. Our expert tutor will provide you with a step-by-step approach through demonstrations and exercises to learn the vital stages of drawing. Students will learn about materials, studio set-up, line, shape, proportion, perspective, value, light theory, texture, form modelling, spatial relationships and edges through drawing from simple still life compositions. This short course will help students understand these concepts and provide the necessary skills to make your drawings considerably stronger and more informed.

Course Structure:

  • Lecture on the history of drawing
  • Introduction to drawing materials and studio set-up
  • Learn how to start a drawing through a systematic approach using the envelope and block-in techniques to achieve accurate proportion and structure
  • Understand one and two-point perspective
  • Explanation of light theory and shading techniques
  • Light, value and planes exercises
  • Learn how to create a mass, spatial relationships and how to treat edges through tonal graduation
  • Create finished still life compositions

Drawing is a necessary skill if you wish to paint well. The famous painter Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres once said ‘The drawing is three fourths and half of what constitutes painting. If I had to put a sign over my door, I would write: School of Drawing and I’m certain that I would create painters’.

Our expert tutor will provide you with a step-by-step approach through demonstrations and exercises to learn about the vital stages of painting. Students will learn about materials, studio set-up, colour theory (hue, value & chroma), light theory, shape, proportion, perspective, texture, spatial relationships and edges through painting from simple still life compositions. This short course will help students understand these concepts and provide the necessary foundational oil painting skills.

Course Structure:

  • Lecture on the history of oil painting
  • Introduction to painting materials and studio set-up
  • Learn how to prepare a canvas and grind pigments
  • Learn light theory, value and edges through monochromatic exercises
  • Understanding of colour theory through painting the colour wheel, complementary colour exercises and colour mixing exercises
  • Learn underpainting, form painting and finishing techniques
  • Create finished still life compositions

Suitable for adults and teens from 16 years old.  This course is especially suitable for beginners and intermediate students.

A unique short course designed for students (intermediate – advance) interested in learning the 17th Century Dutch flower oil painting technique. Our classically trained tutor will teach you the step-by-step approach through copying a Dutch Old Master’s flower painting. You will learn the traditional indirect method; a painting painted over many days through a layered technique involving a precise drawing, precise underpainting, form painting and glazing.  

Course Structure:

  • Lecture on the history of Dutch Still Life Painting
  • Introduction to painting materials and studio set-up
  • Learn how to draw a precise line drawing of the floral composition and transfer the drawing
  • Explanation of light theory, value, and edges
  • Learn how to paint an open and closed grisaille
  • Explanation colour theory and the hues required for this course (limited palette)
  • Learn hue, value, chroma and colour mixing with limited colours
  • Learn how to form paint and create glazes for the final layer
  • Create a finished copy

An exclusive short course designed for students (intermediate – advance) interested in learning the 16th Century chiaroscuro portrait painting technique. Chiaroscuro is the use of strong contrasts between light and dark in a composition. A technique developed by Old Masters including Leonardo da Vinci, Caravaggio and Rembrandt. Through copying from a Caravaggio portrait, our classically trained tutor will teach you the step-by-step methodology to achieve this effect. You will learn an approach that requires a precise drawing, underpainting and form painting using a limited palette.

Course Structure:

  • Lecture on the history of Chiaroscuro Painting
  • Introduction to painting materials and set-up
  • Learn how to draw a precise line drawing of the portrait and transfer the drawing
  • Explanation of light theory, value, and edges
  • Explanation colour theory and the hues required for this course (limited palette)
  • Learn hue, value, chroma and colour mixing through with five colours
  • Learn how to paint an underpainting, create a dead layer and form pain
  • Create a finished Old Master copy

A specialized short course designed for students (intermediate – advance) interested in learning the 19th Century alla prima oil painting technique. Alla prima, wet-on-wet, au premier coup or direct painting is a painting technique in which layers of wet paint are applied in one or two sittings before the first layer has dried. This is a fast way of painting that requires precision and a real understanding of light theory, value, hue, chroma and edges. Our expert tutor will teach the step-by-step approach through copying 19th Century old master landscapes such a John Singer Sargent, Degas and Monet to name a few. 

Course Structure:

  • Lecture on the history of all prima painting
  • Introduction to painting materials and set-up
  • Learn light theory, value, and edges
  • Explanation of colour theory and the hues required for this course (extended palette)
  • Learn hue, value, chroma and colour mixing
  • Learn how to paint wet-into-wet
  • Create a finished Old Master copies
