Art Classes for Children and Teens in London

“Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up.” — Pablo Picasso

Welcome to Sunny Art Centre, an esteemed art educational institution known as one of London’s premium destinations for art education. Our Kids and Teens Art Courses are highly acclaimed, offering drawing and painting classes at our central London studio in Covent Garden.

These courses give your child the chance to develop real artistic skill under professional guidance. They are a creative outlet during school holidays and academic support through GCSE, A-level and art scholarship applications alike.

Whether your child simply wants to draw and paint better, or is building a portfolio for a scholarship, a college or an art and design foundation, we tailor a long-term bespoke study plan around them. Open to children and teens aged 7 to 17.

Every class is capped at ten students, so your child works with a professional artist beside them rather than following a single project set for the whole group.

A Course Built Around Your Child

Tutor giving individual guidance to a teenage student at Sunny Art Centre

Small group, individual tuition. That combination is our teaching model, and it is what lets a seven-year-old and a sixteen-year-old work well in the same studio.

Personal Study Plan

A dedicated tutor assesses your child’s level and interests, then shapes a bespoke study plan that guides the rest of the course.

Individual Tuition

Classes have a maximum of 10 students. Tutors work with each child individually during the lesson rather than setting one project for the whole group.

Progress Recorded

Your child’s workspace is set up before they arrive, the tutor has their subject prepared, and their progress is recorded at the end of every lesson.

Flexible Booking

Lessons sit in your online account and are deducted only when you book a class, so your child moves at their own pace and you choose the Sundays that suit you.

What Your Child Will Learn

Child drawing a graphite study at Sunny Art Centre

A progression, not a list of topics. Drawing comes first because everything else is built on it, and painting follows once the eye and the hand are working together.

Drawing Foundations

Shapes, line quality and shading first — the skills everything else is built on.

Tone & Form

Perspective, proportion, tonal range and mark-making, so drawings begin to hold three-dimensional form.

Watercolour

Materials and tools, colour mixing, washes, blending and layering — from first washes to a finished painting.

Acrylic Painting

Paint application, opacity, texture and edges, and the confidence to work a picture up to a finish on canvas.

Subjects

Still life, portrait, landscape and animal subjects, with historical and contemporary examples discussed in class.

Portfolio & Beyond

More ambitious individual projects, school art coursework, and portfolio preparation for GCSE, A-level and scholarship applications.

Drawing foundations→ Colour and paint→ Subjects and composition→ Independent work

Safeguarding & Wellbeing

Students working in the Sunny Art Centre studio, Covent Garden

Every adult in the room with your child has been checked, and every class is supervised from arrival to collection.

Enhanced DBS Checks

Every tutor and member of staff working with children holds an enhanced DBS check. No exceptions.

Supervised Throughout

Classes run in a secure, supervised and supportive environment, with staff present from arrival to collection.

Parents’ Lounge

A lounge next to the studio with free Wi-Fi and tea, so you can stay close by for the whole two hours.

Ages 7 to 17

Children and teens work in a studio group of no more than ten, with tutors who teach this age range every week.

05

Study with Professional, DBS-Checked Art Tutors

Each art course is uniquely structured and taught by world-leading art tutors and experts with educational backgrounds from institutions such as Central Saint Martins, the Slade School of Fine Art, the Royal Academy of Arts in London, the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, the Athens Academy of Art in Greece and Charles H. Cecil Studios in Florence. Their expertise ensures the highest standards in fine art training.

Kids & Teens Art Course FAQs

The questions parents ask most often before booking.

View all questions →

Where can I find art classes for kids in London?

Sunny Art Centre offers in-person art classes for children and teenagers at our professional art studio in Covent Garden, Central London. Our regular Sunday classes teach drawing, watercolour and acrylic painting through structured, personalised programmes. We also run intensive summer and half-term art courses during the school holidays. Explore our kids and teens art classes in London to compare course packages, lesson content and the current timetable.

What ages are your children's art classes suitable for?

Our regular children’s and teenagers’ art classes are open to students aged 7–17. Students are taught according to their individual age, experience and technical ability rather than being expected to complete exactly the same project. Parents of children outside this age range should contact our office before purchasing a course so that we can recommend the most appropriate option.

Are your classes suitable for complete beginners?

Yes. Complete beginners are very welcome. Your child does not need previous art lessons, a portfolio or any natural artistic ability to join. The tutor will assess their current level and introduce suitable exercises gradually. Beginners normally start by developing observation, line control, shape, proportion, shading and basic composition before progressing to more advanced drawing and painting projects.

Are these structured art lessons or arts-and-crafts sessions?

Our courses are structured fine-art lessons rather than general arts-and-crafts activity sessions. Students learn practical drawing and painting skills, including proportion, perspective, tonal values, colour theory, colour mixing, brush control, composition and the correct use of art materials. We encourage creativity and personal expression, but this is supported by a strong technical foundation.

When are your regular weekend art classes for kids?

Our regular children’s and teenagers’ classes take place every Sunday: Drawing: 9:00am–11:00am Painting: 9:00am–11:00am Painting: 11:30am–1:30pm Each lesson lasts two hours. Students can attend drawing, painting or both sessions, depending on their course package, current study plan and availability. Visit our Sunday art classes for kids and teens page to view course options and book lessons.

Can my child attend both drawing and painting on Sunday?

Yes. Subject to available places and appropriate course credits, children can attend both the morning drawing lesson and the later painting lesson. The break between the two classes gives students time to rest and prepare for the next session. Attending both sessions can be helpful for students who want to make faster progress or apply their drawing skills directly to painting.

Does my child have to attend every Sunday, and can they start at any time?

No. Our regular courses use a flexible credit-based booking system, and enrolment is rolling, so your child does not need to wait for the beginning of a school term. After purchasing a course package, parents can log in to the student account, view the available timetable and book suitable Sunday lessons. A confirmed booking is required for every class. Your child should not arrive without a valid booking because places are limited.

What will my child learn in the drawing classes?

Drawing lessons may cover: Observational drawing Shape and construction Line quality and mark-making Measuring proportions Light and shadow Shading and tonal values Perspective Composition Still-life, portrait, landscape and animal subjects Developing finished artworks The exact content depends on your child’s age, current ability, interests and chosen course package.

What will my child learn in the painting classes?

Painting lessons may introduce watercolour and acrylic painting, including: How to use paints, brushes and painting surfaces Colour theory and colour mixing Warm and cool colours Brush control and paint application Water control in watercolour Layering and blending Transparency and opacity Creating edges and textures Light, tone and depth Composition and suitable subjects Students normally build foundational drawing skills before or alongside their painting studies.

Do you teach oil painting, and does every child make the same artwork?

The standard kids and teens course packages focus primarily on drawing, watercolour and acrylic painting. Students interested specifically in oil painting should contact our office before enrolling — depending on the student’s age, experience and goals, we may recommend a tailored programme or private tuition. Our group classes follow a personalised teaching approach, so children do not all make the same artwork. Children may work on different projects according to their age, experience, interests and stage of study, and the tutor moves around the class providing individual demonstrations and feedback. This allows beginners and more experienced young artists to learn in the same class without being required to work at the same speed or level.

How many children are in each art class?

There is a maximum of 10 students in each group class. The small-group format allows tutors to provide each child with individual demonstrations, technical corrections and feedback.

Who teaches the children's art classes, and are the tutors DBS-checked?

Classes are taught by professional artists and experienced art tutors. Our tutors have strong technical backgrounds in drawing and painting and are experienced in supporting children and teenagers at different ability levels. The tutor may vary according to the course, date and subject being taught. Yes. Tutors and staff working with children hold enhanced DBS checks. Classes take place in a supervised, structured and supportive studio environment.
