You might wonder what a Chinese black ink stick really is. As you may know, the ink for Chinese calligraphy is not in liquid form. It is a solid stick, a compressed mixture of vegetable soot and glue that the calligrapher grinds with some water on a special ink stone to produce liquid ink. Pine Soot Practicing Ink Stick for Calligraphy Writing, Sumi-e and Fineline Painting.

The Jin Bu Huan is made of pine soot, which produces a matte finish (as opposed to the glossy finish produced by ink sticks made of oil soot). This ink typically is used for secondary subjects in paintings, so they do not draw attention from the main focal point of the work. On the side of this stick, one can read Jin Bu Huan, the stick manufacturer’s name in Chinese. This name literally translates to “cannot be traded with gold”.
