As a visual artist, Emma has become known for her instinctive use of colour, which often captures the otherworldly nature of landscapes.
With art and craft in the family DNA, daily drawing and painting was an intrinsic part of growing up. Early years included art instruction from Neil Shawcross (RHA, RUA) and Roger Lively which led to a foundation course in art at The University Of Ulster. There, she met other painters including Ken Hamilton, Paloma King, Gareth Reid, and Noel Murphy followed by an arts-based degree at The University of Ulster. During the last four years, Emma has been under tuition in London under the watchful eye of Kevin Chapman (Le Diplome De Societaire, RA, Discerning Eye Award Winner).
Delamont (II) is a semi-autobiographical piece of work, and first in a series of paintings from a project called Land’E’Scapes. This painting depicts Delamont country park, an area of outstanding natural beauty located in Killyleagh Co Down. The painting from a distance looks like a literal depiction of a peaceful landscape. It is only upon closer inspection one can see a story woven carefully amongst the layers.
This refers to a story from May 1974 (the year of Emma’s birth) in which a member of the British army shot a young child with a bullet through the head prompting an investigation into the conduct of soldiers in the province. The incident stoked an angry response from families nationwide. Emma’s father worked for the leading newspaper in the city, and the family grew up surrounded by headlines linked to the political situation. Emma’s mother was a nurse and was also interested in alternative therapies and mindfulness. She would take Emma and her sisters to places such as Delamont to escape the atrocities. In a world which is increasingly in a VUCA state, this piece reminds us that nature can offer a safe haven no matter where we come from.
