Köfe is the medieval Ottoman name for a city in Crimea, today known as Feodosia, located on the southeast coast of the Black Sea. Before the Ottomans conquered the coastal areas in Crimea, the Genoese Italians lived there.
Serhii Korabelnikov’s latest painting Kefe portrays an evening coastal view of the historical 14th-century wall and tower, which are the remains of a Genoese fortress in Feodosia. Korabelnikov’s sensitively perceives global changes in the modern world by looking at architectural and cultural monuments being destroyed to make space for modern replacements. Unlike previous regional artists who had the opportunity to portray their historical landscape, today, especially in Crimea, artists are faced with large fences built by officials who are only interested in expanding their land developments. Therefore, the artist tried to capture all possible remains of cultural heritage, now slowly being consumed by modernity, through pictorial echoes of a vanishing era.
