Press Release: 2012 the 9th Shanghai Biennale Special Project:
“Mingyuan• Zhongshan Park Project”:
On The Way Home--Shanghai Pudong International Airport Special Exhibition
At 3:00 pm, January 11th, 2013, On The Way Home--Shanghai Pudong International Airport Special Exhibition of “Mingyuan• Zhongshan Park Project” of the 9th Shanghai Biennale 2012 will officially open in the art museum of Shanghai Pudong International Airport. Among the exhibitions of “Zhongshan Park Project”, it is hosted by the 9th Shanghai Biennale Committee 2012, co-organized by Shanghai Zendai Group and Shanghai Zendai Cultural Development Co., Ltd. undertook by Shanghai International Airport Co., Ltd. and has gained support from the consulates general of nations in Shanghai. On the Way Home, organized in collaboration with Qiu Zhijie, the chief curator of 9th Shanghai Biennale Committee 2012, Shen Qibin, the curator and Xiao Ge, the curator invited of “Zhongshan Park Project”, will consist of a collection of art by over 40 artists who have ever lived, studied or worked abroad and now play an active role in the art circles.
The exhibition is located in Shanghai Pudong International Airport, which is a crossroad between home and abroad, linking up the mainland with the world as well as providing a window for the 9th Shanghai Biennale 2012 to outside. As the biggest joint exhibition for returned artists throughout the history of Chinese contemporary art, it will depict the phenomenon of returned artist group in a brand-new way and discuss about cultural root-seeking in the era of information explosion.
The “returnees” have always been dominating cultural development of China throughout over 100 years, such as Li Shutong, Lin Fengmian, Xu Beihong and Liu Haisu, etc. of the first generation, who have shaken the world of Chinese art. After the Opening-up, artists went abroad for cultural exchange and study, some of which settled down and were called the “overseas corps". Alongside economic globalization and rapid improvement of Chinese economy in recent years, more and more youth could afford to study abroad, while there is an increasing number of Chinese artists return to China, forming a new “returnees" upsurge.
Following the concepts of “resources, revisit, reform and republic”, “On The Way Home” is taken as the theme for this exhibition, indicating that overseas study is also a brainwash to the artists—they are implanted with different methodology, value and historical viewpoint, enriched and changed whilst being colonized unknowingly. At the edge of losing own cultural root and facing the cultural conflict, the returned artists may feel twisted and ambivalent: where’s our spiritual home? Where do we head for? Where’s my way home? Shall we keep going abroad or return? But to where? Embracing over thousands of years' culture, Chinese people still lack for confidence in contemporary art. Why? There is a thin “diaphragm” between contemporary and traditional art, requiring "on the way home” to penetrate through it.
Acting like a physical space as well as a psychological space for departure and return, Pudong International Airport is a meaningful place for discussing the term of “On The Way Home” to those returned artists, and will definitely arouse sympathy of all the passengers and visitors. Meanwhile, it is a point which links up the mainland and world, and further an important topic assigned by Chinese art for over 100 years.
The exhibition will represent various works of numerous artists openly, across a broad age spectrum from 1950s to 1980s. All the artists once studied or lived abroad, such as France, the U.S.A, Germany, Britain, Australia, Canada, Japan and Israel, etc. including An Xiaotong, Cao Ping, Ding Li, Fang Qi, Guan Huaibin, Gao Jie, Gao Yan, Guo Hao, He Haoyuan, Huang Hankang, Ji Zhou, Li Di, Li Fang, Li Qingbin, Liu Guangyun, Liu Wentao, Liu Xinyi, Liu Zhenchen, Lin Yuyan, Ma Chong, Peng Xiaojia, Sha Zijian, Shen Shaomin, Shen Yi, Sun Yinjie, Tao Yi, Wang Chengliang, Wang Du, Wang Ge, Wang Shuibo, Wang Yu, Wu Qinqin, Xi Jianjun, Xiao Lu, Ying Haiming, Yang Jinsong, Yang Qian, Ye Funa, Zhang Chunhong, Zhang Chunbo, Zhang Jiebai, Zhang Qikai, Zhang Zhandi. In addition, a German artist Rolf A. Kluenter, who settles down in Shanghai is also invited to the exhibition for the discussion on cultural root-seeking from the view of a "stander-by”. The works exhibited cover traditional oil painting on canvas, different artistic media such as interactive installation, films and live demonstration, showing creation and thoughts of current returned artists in all directions. After experiencing the difference between eastern and western cultures in separate time and region, those artists may have a more direct and true explanation to “globalization” and “pluralism”.
We believe that in the special scene of Shanghai Pudong International Airport, to collect and exhibit works of the artists who once lingered outside China in a dual or plural artistic and cultural background will arouse a special effect and bring profound meaning at Shanghai Biennale of multiculturalism.
The “Zhongshan Park Project” of the 9th Shanghai Biennale 2012 was started in Shanghai Zhongshan Park on September 10th, 2012, and has successively expanded to Ruijin Hotel, M50 Vart Center, Shanghai Pudong International Airport and Hongqiao Railway, aiming to reveal the sense of national identity to the “strange" returned artists as well as the art life of foreigners in Shanghai. Concurrently, the project will reach all the Zhongshan parks in south China, including Zhangzhou, Xiamen and Quanzhou and cross the straits in the east to represent works of artists throughout the country in art organizations of Jinmen, Hualian and Danshui. All the works of “Zhongshan Park Project” will be sent back to Shanghai in late December and exhibited on the 5th floor of Shanghai Contemporary Art Museum (Powerstation of Art) till March 31st, 2013 after selection.
